What Makes a Custom Rug Different

The difference between a custom rug and a purchased stock rug is not incremental — it's categorical. Every material is controlled: the wool source, the silk content, the natural or chemical dye specification, the knot density. And every design element is controlled: traditional Persian medallion patterns can be modified in proportion or color, tribal designs can be adapted for modern homes, entirely original designs can be commissioned from scratch.

Custom Cut Rugs & Alternative Sizing

In addition to full custom design, we also offer custom cut rugs — larger rugs that can be trimmed and rebound to your exact specifications when standard dimensions don't fit your space. This is particularly useful for hallways, staircase landings, entryway inserts, and irregularly shaped rooms where a stock size would leave awkward gaps. Every custom cut rug is professionally rebound with matched serge or fringed edge finishing that maintains the integrity of the original piece.

For clients who need dimensions between standard sizes, we can also produce custom made area rugs to exact measurements. If your Silverleaf dining room needs an 11'6" x 15'2" rug to fit under the table with proper margins, we can weave one to those precise dimensions. There is no size specification we cannot accommodate.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Wool

The vast majority of custom rugs are woven from hand-spun wool. We source premium wools including highland wool, New Zealand wool, and Kurk wool — the fine wool from the throat area of sheep that produces the softest, most lustrous rugs. All wools are hand-spun and hand-dyed for the color depth and complexity that machine-processed wool cannot replicate.

Silk

For finer knot densities and higher-luster surfaces, we produce custom silk rugs in silk-on-silk or silk-and-wool combinations. Silk rugs typically feature knot densities of 400-800+ knots per square inch and are commissioned for formal rooms where the visual impact of silk is appropriate to the space.

Natural & Synthetic Dyes

Custom rugs can be produced with either natural vegetable dyes (indigo, madder root, walnut hull, pomegranate) or high-quality chrome dyes depending on your specifications. Natural dyes produce the greatest color complexity and aging character but are more expensive; chrome dyes offer more consistent color matching for interior specifications requiring exact Pantone accuracy.

Knot Density

Custom rugs can be produced at any knot density from 100 KPSI (village-quality tribal rugs) through 200-300 KPSI (fine Persian city rugs) up to 500-800+ KPSI (investment-grade silk rugs). Higher knot density produces finer pattern detail and takes proportionally longer to weave.
