The Most Complete Form of Rug Repair

Reweaving is the gold standard of rug repair — it's how you make a hole, tear, or worn-through area disappear. Unlike patches, glue, or other shortcuts that cover damage without restoring structure, reweaving rebuilds the damaged section from the foundation up, knot by knot, using the same construction technique the original weaver used. When done properly by a skilled artisan, the repair is virtually invisible from the front of the rug.

At Baluchi Rug Gallery, our artisans have over 30 years of experience reweaving handmade rugs of every type — from coarse tribal pieces with 60 knots per square inch to finely knotted Persian Tabriz and silk rugs with 500+ KPSI. We also reweave flat-woven pieces including Navajo rugs and Kilims using their specific weaving techniques.

How Rug Reweaving Works

Step 1: Damage Assessment

We examine the damaged area and the surrounding rug to determine the knot type (asymmetric Persian, symmetric Turkish, or flat-weave), the knot density, the yarn type and weight, and the pattern that needs to be reconstructed. We also assess the foundation — if the warp and weft threads are damaged, they need to be replaced before any re-knotting can begin.

Step 2: Foundation Reconstruction

If the warp (vertical) threads are broken or missing, we restring new warp threads across the damaged area, anchoring them to the intact warp on either side. We then lay new weft (horizontal) threads to rebuild the foundation grid that the knots will be tied around. This foundation must match the original in thread count and tension.

Step 3: Knot-by-Knot Re-Knotting

Using yarn that matches the original in fiber type, weight, twist, and color, our artisans tie new knots one at a time into the rebuilt foundation — replicating the original pattern row by row. On a rug with 200 KPSI, a one-inch square repair requires 200 individually tied knots. On a fine Persian with 400+ KPSI, the same area requires over 400 knots. This is painstaking, highly skilled work.

Step 4: Pile Trimming & Blending

After the re-knotted area is complete, we trim the new pile to match the height of the surrounding original pile. We then blend the edges of the repair so the transition between old and new is as seamless as possible. On antique rugs, we may age the new yarn slightly to match the patina of the original.

Why Reweaving Is Worth the Investment

A properly rewoven area restores both the rug's appearance and its structural integrity — preventing the damage from spreading further. On a $5,000-$50,000+ handmade rug, a $500-$2,000 reweave is almost always worth it. The alternative — letting a small hole grow into a large one — always costs more in the end. A timely repair today saves a major restoration tomorrow.

Common Causes of Damage We Reweave

We reweave damage from all causes, including moth damage (the most common cause in Arizona — moths eat wool pile down to the foundation), pet damage (chewing, scratching, and urine-weakened fibers), furniture leg compression (heavy furniture can crush and wear through pile over years), tears from moving or improper handling, water damage that has weakened the foundation, and general wear in high-traffic areas (doorways, hallways, in front of seating).

Rug Types We Reweave

We reweave all handmade rug constructions, including hand-knotted pile rugs (Persian, Turkish, Afghan, Indian, Chinese — all knot types), flat-woven rugs (Kilim, Navajo, soumak, dhurrie — using appropriate flat-weave techniques), wool, silk, cotton, and wool-silk blend fibers, and rugs of all ages from new production to antiques over 200 years old.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rug reweaving is rebuilding a damaged area from the foundation up — replacing broken warp threads, re-knotting the pile to match the original pattern and density, and blending the restored section seamlessly with the surrounding rug. It is the most complete form of rug repair and, when done properly, makes damage virtually invisible.

Costs depend on the size of the damaged area, the knot density, and the design complexity. Coarser tribal rugs cost less to reweave than finely knotted pieces. Baluchi Rug Gallery provides free in-person assessments. Call (480) 219-8095.

A skilled artisan can make a reweave virtually invisible from the front by matching knot type, yarn weight, color, and pile height precisely. The repair is visible on the back to a trained eye, but this is expected and shows the repair was done properly using traditional methods.

A small reweave on a coarser rug may take 1-2 weeks. Larger areas or finely knotted rugs (300+ KPSI) can take 4-8 weeks. We provide a timeline estimate during your initial assessment.
