Tribal Rugs

Authentic handmade tribal and village rugs — Kazak, Gabbeh, Baluchi, Kilim, Qashqai, Turkoman, and more — from one of the largest collections in Arizona.

The Art of Tribal Rug Weaving

Tribal rugs are among the most authentic and soulful textiles in the world. Unlike city-workshop rugs that follow precise, pre-drawn cartoons, tribal rugs are woven from memory and instinct by nomadic and village weavers across Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey. Every piece carries the individual creative expression of its maker — the patterns, color choices, and deliberate "imperfections" are what give tribal rugs their extraordinary character and collectibility.

At Baluchi Rug Gallery — named after the Baluchi tribal weaving tradition — tribal rugs are at the core of who we are. Our gallery in Old Town Scottsdale houses one of the largest collections of authentic tribal and village rugs in Arizona, with thousands of pieces across dozens of weaving traditions.

Tribal Rug Styles We Carry

Kazak

Originating from the Caucasus region, Kazak rugs are known for their bold geometric medallions, strong primary colors (deep reds, bright blues, warm ivories), and thick, durable wool pile. They make striking statement pieces in living rooms, dining rooms, and entryways.

Gabbeh

Woven by the Qashqai and Luri nomads of southern Iran, Gabbeh rugs feature minimalist, open-field designs with a thick, plush pile. Their simple beauty — often just a few geometric figures against a solid color ground — makes them a favorite in modern and desert-contemporary interiors.

Baluchi

Our namesake. Baluchi rugs are woven by the Baluch people across the border regions of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. They are characterized by dark, rich color palettes (deep reds, navy, black, and brown), prayer rug formats, and intricate geometric and diamond patterns. They tend to be smaller in scale and are prized by collectors.

Kilim

Flat-woven rugs with no pile, Kilims are lighter and thinner than knotted rugs. They feature bold geometric patterns and vibrant colors, and are produced across Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. Kilims are versatile — they work as floor coverings, wall hangings, table covers, and layering pieces.

Turkoman

Woven by Turkmen tribes across Central Asia, these rugs are distinguished by their repeating "gul" (medallion) patterns and deep red-maroon color palettes. Turkoman rugs have a distinctive, formal rhythm and are exceptionally well-constructed.

Qashqai & Bakhtiari

Iranian tribal traditions known for vivid colors, garden and animal motifs, and bold compositions. These rugs bring energy and warmth to any room and are popular with collectors and designers alike.

Tribal rugs are uniquely suited to Scottsdale's design aesthetic. Their warm earth tones, organic geometry, and handmade character complement the desert landscape and the natural materials (stone, wood, concrete) that define Valley architecture.

Why Tribal Rugs Are Having a Moment

The interior design world has seen a significant shift toward authenticity, handmade objects, and organic imperfection — and tribal rugs are the embodiment of all three. As Scottsdale homeowners move away from mass-produced, trend-chasing decor and toward pieces with provenance and character, tribal rugs have become one of the most sought-after categories. They pair beautifully with mid-century modern furniture, desert-modern architecture, bohemian spaces, and even ultra-minimal interiors where a single bold rug serves as the room's focal point.

Collecting Tribal Rugs

Many tribal rugs are produced in limited quantities by nomadic groups whose weaving traditions are declining. This makes authentic tribal rugs increasingly rare and collectible. Older pieces — especially those with natural dyes, unusual designs, or from well-known weaving groups — can appreciate significantly in value. Baluchi Rug Gallery's staff has over 30 years of expertise and can help you identify pieces with both aesthetic beauty and investment potential.
