Here is the honest truth that separates a specialist from a carpet cleaner: a high price tag does not always mean a rug is hand-knotted. Many beautiful, expensive rugs from designer retailers are actually hand-tufted, power-loomed, or made from wool and viscose blends. That is not a knock on them, they can be lovely pieces, but it changes everything about how they must be cleaned.

A hand-tufted rug, for example, is held together with a latex adhesive and a fabric backing. Soak it the way a carpet cleaner would and that latex can break down, causing odor, shedding, and the backing to separate. A rug made of viscose, often labeled as art silk or bamboo silk, is one of the most water-sensitive materials in existence and can yellow, stiffen, or stain permanently if handled wrong. Even a genuine wool piece can shrink or lose its color under high heat and harsh detergent. Every designer rug receives the same careful, individualized treatment we give a fine antique: pre-inspection with fiber identification and dye testing, deep mechanical dusting to remove the embedded grit that dulls colors and wears fibers from within, full-submersion hand washing with fiber-appropriate cleaning agents at controlled temperatures, thorough rinsing until the water runs completely clear, controlled flat drying with no high-heat dryers, and a final grooming and quality inspection. We never use steam cleaning, machine agitation, or harsh chemicals on any rug. It is the opposite of the one-size-fits-all approach that puts designer rugs at risk.

Delicate, lustrous, and unforgiving of water and heat. Genuine silk needs specialized silk rug cleaning and should never go near a steam machine.
