A hand-knotted rug can be cut down to a smaller size and have its edges re-bound so cleanly that most people would never know it had ever been a different size.

Resizing a rug is about far more than cutting it. The difference between a professional job and a ruined rug is entirely in the finishing. When we reduce a rug, our weavers first secure the newly cut edge so it can never unravel, then re-bind or re-serge it to match the original side finish. If the cut affects the ends, we re-create the fringe or secure the ends the same way. Done correctly, by hand, the resized rug keeps its balance, its beauty, and its structural integrity.
We can reduce a rug's length, its width, or both; turn a large rug into a runner; cut two smaller rugs from one; or reshape a rug to fit an alcove, a kitchen island, or a fireplace hearth. A hand-knotted rug is built one knot at a time, each tied to the foundation. That construction is exactly what makes resizing possible: the rug can be cut along a row of knots, the edge secured, and the side re-bound without the piece falling apart. It's the same craftsmanship that lets a well-made handmade rug last a century and be repaired again and again.
Machine-made and tufted rugs are a different story. Their backing is held together with latex and glue rather than hand-tied knots, so cutting them often causes fraying, shedding, or separation that can't be cleanly finished.
