Why Sheepskin, Cowhide & Fur Need a Specialist
Sheepskin, cowhide, and fur rugs are not like wool area rugs. The hair or wool is attached to a leather hide, and that hide reacts badly to the things most cleaners use. Hot water and steam shrink and stiffen leather. Harsh detergents strip the natural lanolin that keeps sheepskin soft. Soaking a cowhide makes it curl and crack as it dries. A carpet cleaner or a home washing machine can ruin a sheepskin or cowhide in a single wash.
Baluchi Rug Gallery has cared for natural-fiber rugs in Arizona for more than 30 years. We clean hide rugs by hand, control moisture carefully so it never soaks the leather, and dry every piece flat without heat. The result is a clean, soft rug that still lies flat and feels the way it should.
What We Clean
Sheepskin Rugs & Throws
Single, double, and quad sheepskins, sheepskin throws, and sheepskin chair and bench covers. We remove embedded dirt and spills with lanolin-safe products, then groom the fleece so it fluffs back up instead of drying matted.
Cowhide Rugs
Natural and printed hair-on cowhide rugs. We clean the hair by hand in the direction it grows, treat stains and spots, and dry the hide flat so it stays supple and does not curl at the edges.
Fur Rugs, Genuine & Faux
Fur rugs and throws on a hide, and synthetic faux fur rugs. We confirm what each piece is before we start, because genuine fur and faux fur need very different handling, and match our method to the material.
Our Cleaning Process
Inspect
We identify the hide and fiber, check the backing, and note stains, odors, and any weak spots.
Dust & Brush
We shake and brush out grit, desert dust, and pet hair before any cleaning begins.
Treat Spots
Stains, spills, and pet accidents get targeted, hide-safe treatment.
Clean by Hand
Gentle cleaning matched to the material, keeping moisture away from the leather.
Dry & Groom
Flat drying without heat, then grooming to bring back softness and shape.
Questions about your sheepskin, cowhide, or fur rug?
Call (480) 219-8095What Not to Do at Home
Most of the damage we see comes from well-meant cleaning at home. Avoid these:
Don't Machine Wash Sheepskin
Agitation and hot water shrink the hide, strip the lanolin, and mat the wool.
Don't Steam Clean
Steam and heat stiffen leather backing. Read why in can you steam clean a rug.
Don't Soak a Cowhide
A soaked hide curls, stiffens, and can crack as it dries.
Don't Dry With Heat or Sun
Hair dryers, heaters, and Arizona sun dry the leather out fast.
For a fresh spill, blot gently with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and call us. The sooner a stain is treated, the better the result. For pet accidents on wool rugs, see our pet stain and odor removal service.
Caring for Hide Rugs in Arizona
Dry desert air and strong sun are hard on leather. Keep sheepskin and cowhide rugs out of direct sunlight, away from heaters and fireplaces, and give them a shake and a gentle brushing every week or two to release dust. Rotate cowhides placed in high-traffic spots, and plan on a professional cleaning whenever the rug looks dull, flat, or holds an odor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. We clean genuine sheepskin rugs and throws by hand with lanolin-safe products, keeping moisture away from the leather backing so it stays soft. We then dry the rug flat without heat and groom the wool to restore its softness. Call (480) 219-8095 for a free quote.
Yes. Cowhide rugs should never be soaked, because water stiffens and curls the hide. We clean the hair by hand, spot-treat stains, and dry the rug flat so the hide stays supple and lies flat on the floor.
Yes. We inspect every piece first to confirm whether it is genuine fur on a hide or a synthetic faux fur, because each needs a different approach, and we clean it by hand with methods matched to the material.
We do not recommend it for genuine sheepskin. Machine washing and hot water can shrink and stiffen the leather, strip the natural lanolin from the wool, and leave the fleece matted. Small spills can be blotted at home, but a full cleaning is best left to a specialist.
It depends on the size, type, and condition of the piece and on any stains or odors. Call (480) 219-8095 or send us a message with a few details, and we will give you a free quote before any work begins.
