Why Your Rug Still Smells After Cleaning
If you've had your rug "cleaned" after a pet accident and the smell keeps coming back — especially on warm days — you're not imagining it. The previous cleaning only addressed the surface. The real problem is in the foundation.
Here's what happens when a pet urinates on a handmade rug: the liquid wicks through the wool or silk pile, passes through the knot structure, and saturates the cotton warp and weft foundation at the base of the rug. As it dries, uric acid crystalizes inside the foundation — invisible from above but permanently embedded in the rug's structure. These crystals are stable and odorless when dry and cool. But when Arizona's temperatures climb — when your home heats up in the afternoon, when warm feet walk across the rug, when humidity rises even slightly — the crystals reactivate and release that unmistakable ammonia smell.
Standard carpet cleaning, steam cleaning, and even most "rug cleaning" services only clean the pile surface. They may remove the visible stain and temporarily reduce the odor with deodorizers or perfumes. But the uric acid crystals in the foundation remain untouched — and the smell always returns.
How We Actually Eliminate Pet Odor
Step 1: UV Light Inspection
Pet urine isn't always visible to the naked eye — especially on darker rugs or older stains that have dried clear. We inspect your rug under ultraviolet light, which causes urine deposits to fluoresce. This shows us exactly where the contamination is and how extensive it is — including areas you may not have known about.
Step 2: Enzyme Pre-Treatment
We apply enzyme-based solutions directly to every contaminated area. These enzymes are biological agents that break down uric acid crystals at the molecular level — literally digesting the source of the odor. This is not a deodorizer, a perfume, or a masking agent. It's a targeted biochemical treatment that neutralizes the contamination rather than covering it up.
Step 3: Full-Submersion Hand Wash
After the enzyme treatment has had time to work, we fully submerge and hand-wash the rug using our standard 6-step process. The full submersion flushes the now-neutralized contaminants out of the foundation — something surface cleaning physically cannot do. We rinse until the water runs completely clear.
Step 4: Secondary Enzyme Application (If Needed)
For severe contamination — multiple accidents over months or years, or urine that has saturated through to the backing — we may apply a second round of enzyme treatment after washing. Some foundations absorb urine so deeply that a single treatment isn't sufficient to reach every crystal.
Step 5: Controlled Drying & Final Inspection
We dry the rug in a controlled environment and perform a final odor inspection to confirm the treatment was successful. If any trace of odor remains, we retreat before returning the rug to you.
If your pet has an accident on a handmade rug, do NOT use store-bought pet stain removers (OxiClean, Nature's Miracle, Resolve, etc.) — many contain oxidizers, bleaching agents, or chemicals that permanently damage natural dyes and wool fibers. Do NOT use vinegar — it can set certain stains and damage silk. Do NOT use baking soda and scrub — it abrades fiber surfaces and can get trapped in the knot structure. Simply blot with clean dry towels and call us at (480) 219-8095.
Time Is the Critical Factor
The single biggest factor in pet odor removal success is time. A fresh accident treated within 24-48 hours has the highest success rate — the urine hasn't fully crystallized and hasn't had time to permanently alter dye colors. An accident that's been sitting for weeks or months is significantly harder to treat, and old contamination that's been re-wet by previous cleaning attempts can be the most challenging of all.
If your pet has just had an accident on your rug, call us immediately. We offer emergency pickup for pet accidents on valuable handmade rugs.
Safe for All Rug Types
Our enzyme-based treatment is safe for all handmade rug types and fibers, including Persian rugs, Oriental rugs, silk rugs, wool rugs, Navajo rugs, antique rugs, and Kilim flat-weaves. We dye-test every rug before treatment to ensure compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
In most cases, yes — if treated properly and promptly. Pet urine crystallizes in the rug's foundation. Standard surface cleaning only addresses the visible stain, not the uric acid crystals deep in the foundation. Baluchi Rug Gallery uses enzyme-based treatments combined with full-submersion washing to break down and flush out contamination at the foundation level.
If your rug was surface-cleaned or steam-cleaned rather than fully submerged and treated with enzyme solutions, the urine in the foundation was never addressed. Uric acid crystals are reactivated by humidity and warmth — which is why the odor returns on hot Arizona days. Full-submersion with enzyme treatment is the only method that reaches the contamination at its source.
Not when done by a specialist. We test every rug for dye stability before applying any treatment. Our enzyme solutions are formulated to be safe for natural wool and silk fibers and compatible with both vegetable and chrome dyes. We never use bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh oxidizers.
Blot immediately with clean, dry towels — press firmly to absorb as much liquid as possible. Do not rub. Do not use any household cleaning products, vinegar, baking soda, or store-bought pet stain removers. After blotting, call Baluchi Rug Gallery at (480) 219-8095 to schedule professional treatment as soon as possible.
Costs vary based on the rug's size, extent of contamination, number of affected areas, and whether the urine has set over time. Fresh accidents are generally easier and less expensive to treat than old, dried contamination. We provide free estimates and free pickup and delivery. Call (480) 219-8095.
