Why Kilim Cleaning Requires a Different Approach
Kilims are flat-woven rugs — meaning they have no pile (no knots tied around the foundation threads). Instead, the design is created entirely by the interlocking of colored weft threads across the warp. This construction makes Kilims thinner, lighter, and more flexible than knotted pile rugs — but it also makes them more vulnerable during cleaning.
On a pile rug, the dense layer of knotted fibers acts as a buffer between the cleaning process and the structural foundation. On a Kilim, there is no buffer — the warp and weft are directly exposed to water, agitation, and cleaning agents. This means that techniques safe for pile rugs can cause problems on Kilims: excessive agitation can distort the flat-weave structure, hot water can cause wool weft threads to shrink (pulling the rug out of shape), and improper drying can lead to permanent warping or rippling.
Kilims also frequently use vegetable dyes — particularly Turkish, Afghan, and antique Kilims — which can be highly fugitive. A gorgeous Turkish Kilim with vibrant reds and blues can be ruined in minutes if a cleaner doesn't test for colorfastness before washing.

Our Kilim Cleaning Process
At Baluchi Rug Gallery, we carry an extensive Kilim collection in our showroom and have 30+ years of experience handling flat-woven textiles from Turkey, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. Our Kilim cleaning process addresses every vulnerability of flat-weave construction.
We begin with thorough dye testing on every color — Kilim dyes, especially in older pieces, can be unpredictable. We then dust the Kilim gently (flat-weaves require less aggressive dusting than thick pile rugs). The wash uses cool to lukewarm water with low agitation — we hand-wash with care to avoid distorting the weft alignment. After complete rinsing, we dry the Kilim flat under light tension, which prevents the warping, rippling, and shrinkage that can occur when a flat-weave dries unevenly or without support.
Most rug cleaners in Scottsdale — including PV Rugs — don't have a dedicated Kilim cleaning page or process. That's because Kilim cleaning requires different techniques than pile rug cleaning, and most operations don't differentiate. At Baluchi Rug Gallery, we do — because we understand that a $3,000 antique Turkish Kilim deserves the same specialized care as a $20,000 Persian silk rug.
Kilim Types We Clean
We clean all flat-woven textiles, including Turkish Kilims (Anatolian — often the most vibrant and dye-sensitive), Afghan Kilims (bold geometric designs, typically more durable wool), Persian Kilims (Senneh, Bijar — often finely woven with tight construction), Caucasian Kilims (antique and vintage — highly collectible), Central Asian Kilims (Uzbek, Kyrgyz), Indian dhurries (cotton flat-weaves — different fiber handling than wool), soumak weavings (a wrapped flat-weave technique — thicker than standard Kilims), and cicim and jijim embroidered flat-weaves.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Kilim rugs can and should be professionally washed, but they require specialized flat-weave handling. Because Kilims have no pile, the warp and weft threads are directly exposed during cleaning. This means gentler agitation, careful dye testing, and flat drying under light tension to prevent warping or distortion.
Kilim shrinkage is caused by hot water and aggressive agitation. We prevent it by using cool to lukewarm water, gentle hand-washing techniques, and controlled flat drying under light tension. We never use steam cleaners, hot-water extractors, or machine agitation on Kilim rugs.
Every 3-5 years, or every 2-3 years for high-traffic areas. Because Kilims are thinner than pile rugs, dirt passes through them more easily — but it also accumulates on the floor underneath. When cleaning your Kilim, also clean the floor surface beneath it.
Yes. Wall-hung Kilims collect dust and should be cleaned every 5-7 years. We use a gentler approach for wall-hung pieces since they typically have less embedded soil but may have more dust accumulation in the weave structure.
