Why Persian Rugs Require Specialized Cleaning

A Persian rug is not a commodity — it's an investment, often worth thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, with craftsmanship that can span centuries. The materials, dyes, and construction techniques used in Persian rugs are fundamentally different from synthetic carpets and machine-made alternatives, and they require a fundamentally different cleaning approach.

Persian rugs are hand-knotted using natural wool, silk, or cotton fibers dyed with vegetable-based or high-quality chrome dyes. These natural materials are sensitive to heat, harsh chemicals, and aggressive mechanical agitation. Steam cleaning — the standard method used by carpet cleaning companies — can cause Persian rug dyes to bleed and migrate (turning a crisp red medallion into a blurry pink mess), shrink the wool pile irreversibly, weaken the cotton warp and weft foundation, and trap moisture deep inside the rug's structure where it can cause mildew and dry rot.

Pre-Inspection & Dye Testing

Every Persian rug begins with a detailed inspection. We identify the rug's origin, weave type, fiber content, and dye stability. We test for colorfastness before any cleaning begins — because a Tabriz with chrome dyes can tolerate different treatment than a village piece with fugitive vegetable dyes. If we detect any areas of concern — unstable dyes, foundation weakness, moth damage, or old repairs — we discuss them with you before proceeding.

Deep Dusting

We mechanically remove all dry particulate from the rug before water touches it. In Arizona's desert climate, a Persian rug can hold several pounds of fine dust embedded deep in the knot structure. Removing this grit first prevents it from turning to abrasive mud during washing.

Full-Submersion Hand Wash

The rug is fully submerged and hand-washed using cleaning agents specifically selected for Persian rug fibers and dyes. We never use motorized equipment on the pile surface. The full submersion ensures contaminants are flushed from the rug's foundation — not just moved around on the surface.

Thorough Rinse & Controlled Drying

We rinse until the water runs completely clear, then dry the rug flat in a controlled environment. No high-heat dryers, no direct sunlight. The result is a Persian rug that looks refreshed and vibrant — with its colors, fiber integrity, and structural foundation fully preserved.

We clean all Persian rug types and constructions, including Tabriz (finely knotted, often with silk highlights — requires extra care around silk fibers), Isfahan (high knot density, often wool on silk foundation — foundation must be dried carefully), Heriz and Serapi (thick, durable wool — tolerates thorough cleaning well), Kashan (tightly knotted with rich reds and blues — dye testing essential for antique pieces), Nain (delicate, finely knotted with silk highlights — gentle approach required), Qum silk (pure silk — requires the most delicate handling of any Persian type), and village and tribal Persian pieces including Gabbeh, Qashqai, Bakhtiari, and Baluchi.
