The Highest-Stakes Cleaning We Do

An antique rug is irreplaceable. Whether it's a 19th-century Caucasian Kazak that's been in your family for generations, a semi-antique Tabriz you purchased at auction, or a vintage Navajo blanket passed down from a grandparent — there is no second version of this rug. If it's damaged during cleaning, the damage is permanent and the loss — both financial and emotional — is real.

This is why antique rug cleaning is the most specialized service we offer. Every decision — the water temperature, the cleaning agent, the level of agitation, even the direction of the wash — is made based on the specific age, condition, fiber type, and dye method of that individual rug. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to antique rug cleaning, and any cleaner who tells you otherwise is not qualified to handle your piece.

At Baluchi Rug Gallery, we've been cleaning antique and vintage rugs for over 30 years. We also buy, sell, and appraise antique rugs — which means we understand both their craft and their market value. When your 100-year-old Persian rug arrives at our facility, we know exactly what we're holding, what it's worth, and how to clean it without compromising either.

Why Antique Rugs Need Different Treatment

Aged Dyes

Older rugs — particularly those from the 19th and early 20th centuries — often use vegetable-based or early synthetic dyes that have become more fugitive (water-sensitive) with age. Colors that were stable when the rug was new may now be prone to bleeding. We test every color on every antique rug before any wet cleaning begins.

Weakened Foundations

A rug's cotton or wool foundation (the warp and weft threads that hold the knots) deteriorates over decades of use. An antique rug's foundation may be structurally sound for normal use on a floor but unable to withstand the stress of aggressive cleaning or improper handling. We assess foundation integrity during pre-inspection and adjust our process accordingly — in some cases, spot-cleaning compromised areas rather than fully submerging them.

Brittle Fibers

Over time, wool fibers lose some of their natural lanolin and moisture content, making them more brittle. An antique wool rug that has been stored in Arizona's dry climate for decades may have fibers that are more vulnerable to mechanical stress than a newer piece. Our gentler agitation and controlled-temperature wash accounts for this.

Cleaning Protects Value

Counterintuitively, not cleaning an antique rug is more damaging than proper cleaning. The grit, dust, and soil embedded in the rug's foundation acts as microscopic sandpaper — slowly grinding through aged fibers with every footstep. A professionally cleaned antique rug will last decades longer than one that's neglected. The key is choosing a cleaner who knows what they're doing.

Antique Rug Types We Clean

We clean all types of antique and vintage rugs, including antique Persian rugs (Tabriz, Isfahan, Heriz, Kashan, Sarouk, Sultanabad, Ferahan), antique Caucasian rugs (Kazak, Shirvan, Kuba, Dagestan — often the most dye-sensitive antique pieces), antique Turkish rugs (Oushak, Hereke, Konya, Bergama, Ladik), antique tribal and nomadic pieces (Baluchi, Turkoman, Qashqai, Bakhtiari), antique and vintage Navajo blankets and rugs, antique Chinese rugs (Art Deco, Peking, Nichols), semi-antique rugs (40-80 years old), and vintage mid-century pieces from all regions.

Appraisals for Antique Rugs

If you own antique rugs, they should be individually appraised and scheduled on your homeowner's insurance. Without a written appraisal, your insurance will cover them at depreciated generic furnishing value — which could mean receiving a fraction of their actual worth. We offer professional rug appraisals for insurance, estate, donation, and personal valuation purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, when done by a specialist who understands antique rug construction. Antique rugs often have weakened foundations, aged dyes, and fragile fibers that require gentler handling. Baluchi Rug Gallery inspects every antique piece for structural integrity and dye stability before cleaning. Proper cleaning actually helps preserve an antique rug by removing abrasive grit that accelerates deterioration.

Improper cleaning can absolutely damage value — dye bleeding, shrinkage, and foundation damage are all risks with inexperienced cleaners. However, proper professional cleaning by a specialist protects and can enhance value by removing embedded dirt. A clean, well-maintained antique rug is always worth more than a dirty, neglected one.

Very carefully. Antique rugs over 100 years old receive our most conservative approach: thorough dye testing, gentle dusting, low-temperature submersion with minimal agitation, exhaustive rinsing, and slow controlled drying. If any area is structurally compromised, we may spot-clean rather than fully submerge.

We recommend appraising after cleaning, as a clean rug allows for more accurate assessment. However, if you suspect the rug is extremely valuable, a pre-cleaning inspection can document its condition before treatment. Baluchi Rug Gallery offers professional appraisals for insurance, estate, and personal valuation.
