An Oriental Rug Dealer in Old Town Scottsdale, Serving Phoenix and the Valley

Buying an oriental rug is not like buying a sofa. Two rugs that look alike in a photo can differ enormously in knot density, wool quality, dyes, and how long they will last, and the only way to really judge them is to see them, touch them, and turn them over. That is why buyers from all over Phoenix and the Valley come to Baluchi Rug Gallery.

Our showroom in Old Town Scottsdale holds over 7,000 handmade rugs, with oriental rugs in every major style, color, and size, from small accent pieces and runners to oversized rugs for great rooms. Our family has been in the handmade rug business for over 30 years. We import directly, we know how each rug is made, and we will tell you honestly what you are looking at, whether you are buying your first oriental rug or adding to a collection.

What Is an Oriental Rug?

"Oriental rug" is the broad name for handmade rugs from the traditional weaving regions of Asia: Turkey, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Central Asia, and Persia. A genuine oriental rug is hand-knotted or hand-woven from natural fibers, usually wool on a cotton or wool foundation, sometimes with silk. Each region has its own knots, motifs, and colors, which is why a bold Kazak, a soft Oushak, and a finely detailed Persian design can all be oriental rugs and still look nothing alike. For a deeper dive, read our complete guide to handmade rug types.

Oriental Rug Styles in Our Showroom

Kazak & Caucasian Designs

Bold geometric medallions, strong reds, blues, and ivories, and thick, durable wool. Kazak rugs are among our most popular oriental rugs because they hold up beautifully in busy living rooms and work in everything from traditional to desert-modern homes.

Tribal & Village Rugs

Woven from memory by village and nomadic weavers, these rugs are full of character: Baluchi, Turkoman, and other tribal designs in deep, earthy palettes. Tribal pieces are the heart of our collection. See our tribal rugs.

Persian Designs

Classic medallion and floral designs in the Tabriz, Kashan, Heriz, and Nain traditions, with refined detail and rich color. Learn more about our Persian rugs.

Oushak-Style & Soft-Toned Rugs

Muted creams, golds, sage, and soft coral in large-scale, Oushak-inspired floral patterns. These are a favorite of interior designers because they bring the warmth of an oriental rug to a room without overwhelming it.

Kilims & Flat-Weaves

No pile, bold geometry, and endless versatility as floor rugs, runners, or layering pieces. Browse our Kilim collection.

Transitional & Modern Oriental Rugs

Traditional patterns in updated, washed palettes, and contemporary designs hand-knotted the traditional way. See our modern and contemporary handmade rugs.

How to Tell a Genuine Hand-Knotted Oriental Rug

Many rugs sold as "oriental" in furniture stores and online are machine-made or hand-tufted copies. They look similar on day one, but they will not last or hold their value. Here is what to check:

Turn It Over

On a hand-knotted rug, the design shows clearly on the back, knot by knot. A canvas or glued backing means it is hand-tufted.

Look at the Fringe

Real fringe is the end of the rug's own warp threads. Fringe sewn onto the ends is a sign of a machine-made or tufted rug.

Expect Small Irregularities

Slight variations in color and shape are the mark of a weaver's hand, not a flaw.

Check the Fiber

Look for natural wool, silk, and cotton. "Art silk" and "bamboo silk" are viscose, which crushes and water-stains.

Why Buy From a Dealer

A specialist dealer gives you things a furniture store or website cannot. You can compare dozens of oriental rugs side by side in natural light, feel the difference between good and great wool, and get straight answers about where and how each rug was made. You also get a partner for the life of the rug: our team cleans oriental rugs by hand, repairs and restores them in-house, and provides professional rug appraisals. If you need a size or color you cannot find, our custom rug program can make it.

Try It at Home, Free

An oriental rug can look completely different on your floors and under your lighting than it does in a showroom. Tell us your room size and style, and we will bring a curated selection to your home anywhere in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, or the Valley. No cost, no obligation. You only keep what you love. Schedule your in-home trial.

Caring for Your Oriental Rug in the Desert

Arizona is good to wool. Natural wool handles the dry air and holds up to sun better than synthetics. Use a quality pad on tile and stone, rotate your rug every six months to even out sun exposure, and have it professionally hand-washed every few years to remove the fine desert dust that vacuums leave behind. Phoenix homeowners can schedule rug cleaning with pickup and delivery.

An oriental rug is a handmade rug from the traditional rug-weaving regions of Asia, including Turkey, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Central Asia, and Persia. Genuine oriental rugs are hand-knotted or hand-woven from natural fibers such as wool, silk, and cotton.

All Persian rugs are oriental rugs, but not all oriental rugs are Persian. Oriental is the broad category for handmade rugs from Asia. Persian refers to a specific weaving tradition known for designs like Tabriz, Kashan, and Heriz.

Turn it over. On a hand-knotted rug, the design is clearly visible on the back, the knots are slightly irregular, and the fringe is the end of the rug's own warp threads rather than a strip sewn on. Hand-tufted rugs have a canvas or glued backing that hides the knots. Our team will show you the difference in person.
